How does the driving lesson process work?
1. You can start taking driving lessons from the age of 16,5.
2. Start taking driving lessons before you have passed your theory test.
3. You can easily pass your theory exam with our one-day classroom theory course, after which you can take the exam at the CBR on the same day.
4. On average, you will need about 45 driving lessons for your exam.
5. During your driving lessons you will receive several feedback moments, including interim evaluations and a mock exam, so that you know exactly where you stand in your learning process.
6. Our practice exam offers you realistic preparation for the real practical exam.
7. Our team provides you with structured guidance according to the official Driving Training in Stages (RIS method).
8. As soon as you are ready, we will schedule your practical exam at the CBR, often within a few weeks.
What is the RIS method?
At Rijschool Caland we work with the RIS method (Driving training in steps), a proven successful approach developed by the CBR. With this method you learn to drive in clear, manageable steps, so that you know exactly what is expected of you. Thanks to interim tests and regular feedback moments you get continuous insight into your progress and points of attention. This way you know exactly what you still need to practice to start the practical exam safely and confidently.
You will receive a RIS book, in which you will find all the important information to improve your driving skills. This book is an ideal tool during your practical lessons, helps you to learn more efficiently and saves time. In addition, the special student card of the RIS method makes your progress clear and this method helps to increase your chance of passing by up to 25%.

How many lessons do I need on average to get my driver's license?
The average number of driving lessons needed to be ready for the practical exam is around 45 lessons. This can vary per student, depending on factors such as learning speed, driving experience and traffic insight.
From what age can I start taking driving lessons?
You can already start from 16,5 years start your driving lessons. From the age of 17 you can take the practical exam. If you pass at 17, you must drive under the supervision of a coach via the 18toDrive system until you are 2. From the age of 18 you are allowed to drive independently.
Until when can I cancel or reschedule a driving lesson?
Driving lessons must be canceled or rescheduled at least two working days in advance.
What is the difference between manual and automatic driving lessons?
Gear shifting lessons: You learn to drive with a clutch and gear stick. This gives more freedom, because after your exam you are allowed to drive both manual and automatic.
Automatic driving lessons: Here you don't have to switch, which is easier and faster to learn.
Please note: with an automatic driving licence (code 78) you are not allowed to drive a manual car.
Can I switch to an automatic if manual is difficult?
Yes, you can always switch to automatic driving lessons if shifting gears proves too difficult. This makes driving easier and can prepare you for the exam faster. Keep in mind that with an automatic driving license (code 78) you are only allowed to drive an automatic.
Can I get a refund for my punch card?
Strippenkaarts must be used in full, no refunds are possible. This is possible with packages and individual lessons.
Can I pay in installments?
Payment in installments (two or three) is only possible when purchasing packages, unless it is a compact or promotional package.
Can Driving School Caland apply for a health declaration for me?
No, the student must submit his/her Health Declaration himself/herself.

How many driving lessons do I need for an automatic license?
On average, you need between 40 and 45 driving lessons for an automatic driving license. This is often slightly less than for a manual car, because you do not lose time clutching and shifting. The exact number of lessons depends on your learning pace and experience.
Is driving an automatic difficult?
No, driving an automatic is actually easier than driving a manual car. You don't have to clutch or change gears, so you can fully focus on the traffic. This makes it especially ideal for novice drivers or people who have difficulty changing gears.
Can I get my driver's license with an automatic car?
Yes, you can definitely get your driver's license with an automatic. You will then take the exam in an automatic and receive an automatic driver's license. Note: with this license you may only drive an automatic, not a manual car.
How long does it take to get an automatic driving license?
How long it takes to get an automatic driving license depends on your learning pace, availability and the number of lessons you need. On average, it takes between 6 and 12 weeks, mainly because you usually need fewer lessons than with manual. What is the Vehicle Control (AVB) exam?
The AVB exam (General Vehicle Control) consists of seven exercises, divided into four categories:
- Slow exercises: Slow slalom, imaginary figure eight, half turn, driving away from a parking space and driving at walking pace.
- Quick exercises: Fast slalom, avoidance exercise and deceleration exercise.
- Braking exercises: Emergency stop, precision stop and stop test.
- Special operation: Reverse parking while walking.
You pass if you perform five of the seven exercises correctly; you may fail a maximum of two exercises. The AVB exam takes place on a closed-off area of the CBR and is the first step towards your motorcycle license. Once you pass, you can focus on the traffic lessons and prepare for the AVD exam. This way, you are well on your way to getting your motorcycle license in Amsterdam!
What is the Road Participation Exam (AVD)?
Before you take the AVD exam, you will first drive a lesson to get used to the motorcycle and the traffic. During the exam itself, the examiner follows you in a car and gives instructions via a walkie-talkie. The drive takes about 35 minutes and includes a stop assignment as an exercise.
The examiner will assess you on your viewing technique, braking, following distance, safety, anticipation, decisiveness and smooth driving behaviour. Do you drive safely and confidently? Then you will pass and you can finally pick up your motorcycle license.
What types of motorcycle licenses are there?
There are different motorcycle licenses: A1, A2 and A. The license you need depends on your age and the type of motorcycle you want to ride.
A1 motorcycle license is for light motorcycles up to 125cc, and you can start from the age of 17.
A2 is for engines up to 35 kW, suitable from 20 years.
A is for heavy motorcycles and can be obtained from the age of 24, or after 2 years of A2.

How does the driving lesson process work?
We offer motorcycle lessons in Amsterdam for categories A1, A2, and A stepped. This way, you can get your motorcycle license in Amsterdam quickly, well-prepared, and with confidence. View the steps:
- You can start taking motorcycle lessons when you are 17 years old.
- It varies from person to person, but on average you need 20 to 25 motorcycle driving lessons to get your motorcycle license in Amsterdam.
- Before you can start your practical exam, you must have passed a theory exam. This can be done at the CBR. Driving school Caland offers theory courses to prepare you well.
- First you do the AVB exam (vehicle control), then the AVD exam (traffic participation). At Rijschool Caland you prepare yourself extensively for both exams.
Do I need to bring my own motorcycle gear?
With us, your learning experience is central, and that also means taking care of your safety and comfort from the first lesson. We provide you with the necessary motorcycle clothing, so that you can fully focus on mastering the motorcycle.
We arrange:
- Motorcycle helmet
- Motorcycle gloves
- Motorcycle jacket
- Motorcycle pants
Of course you can also provide your own motorcycle clothing.

At what age can I start taking motorcycle lessons?
You may start taking motorcycle lessons from the age of 17. However, the minimum age to take practical exams depends on the motorcycle license category:
- A1 (light engine, max. 125cc): Motorcycle lessons from age 17, practical exam from age 18.
- A2 (medium-weight motorcycle): Motorcycle lessons and practical exam from age 20.
- A (heavy motorcycle): Immediate entry from age 24, or from age 22 if you have held an A2 driving licence (tiered) for two years.
You can start lessons at a young age and choose the right motorcycle license category depending on your age.

What is the difference between a moped and scooter license?
You don't need a separate driver's license for either a moped or a scooter: you can obtain a category AM license. This also allows you to ride a moped or speed pedelec.
The scooter driving license age is 16. You can take the theory exam from 15,5 years old and start practical lessons as soon as you turn 16. The difference isn't in the driving license itself, but in the vehicles: a moped has a maximum speed of 45 km/h, while a scooter has a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
How does a scooter driving lesson proceed?

Step 1: Schedule theory exam
You can start scooter riding lessons from the moment you are allowed to take your theory exam, which is from the age of 15,5. You start by learning the theory, either online or in a classroom setting, and then take the CBR theory exam.
Step 2: Trial lesson and lesson advice
After obtaining your theory certificate, you book a trial scooter driving lesson at Rijschool Caland. During this trial lesson, we will look together at how many practical lessons you approximately need.
Step 3: Take practical lessons
On average, students need four to six practical lessons. Thanks to our efficient planning, you can often follow these lessons in one day, so that you are quickly ready for the exam. In these lessons, you practice all important components such as traffic insight, braking, taking corners and participating safely in traffic.
Step 4: Take the practical exam
From the day you turn 16, you can take your practical exam. Our instructors will prepare you for this step by step, including practicing on exam routes in Amsterdam.
Step 5: Get on the road independently!
After passing your practical exam, you are immediately allowed to drive your scooter or moped independently.

How long does it take to get your moped or scooter license?
How quickly you can obtain your scooter license depends on your preparation and driving experience. For the theory exam, you can choose a one-day theory course, where you'll receive a full day of instruction followed by an exam at the CBR (Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing). This way, you'll complete the theory portion in just one day.
In some cases, the practical exam can be completed in a single day. Depending on your level, we schedule the lessons and the exam on the same day.
With the right preparation, you can often get your scooter driving license within just a few days.
What do you need for your moped or scooter license?
To apply for your moped license, you need a few things. The minimum age for obtaining a moped license is 16. From the age of 15,5, you can take the theory exam at the CBR, so you can start practical lessons immediately when you turn 16.
In addition, you must have a valid theory certificate before you can take your practical exam. After passing your practical exam, you apply for your driving license at the To avoid surprises,For this, you need a valid ID and a passport photo that meets the requirements.
With your AM license, you're then permitted to operate a moped, scooter, moped, or speed pedelec. Our driving school provides fully approved scooter clothing and equipment, but you're also welcome to bring your own approved helmet and equipment.

The scooter and moped license fees average between €350 and €600, depending on the number of practical lessons you need. You also pay €135 for the theory course and €220 for the practical exam.

Yes, that's possible. If you already have your theory certificate, you can complete your practical lessons and exam in one day. This means you'll often have your scooter license in a single day, provided you're well prepared and ready for the exam.
How many lessons do I need for my moped or scooter license?
On average, you'll need 4 to 6 practical lessons to obtain your moped or scooter license. The exact number depends on your experience and confidence. At Caland Driving School, we tailor the lessons to your level, so you can take your exam quickly and safely.
Are you allowed to ride a scooter with a car driving license?
Yes, with a category B driving license, you're automatically allowed to drive a scooter or moped. The AM license is included in your car license, so you don't need to take a separate test. So, if you already have your car license, you can immediately take to the road on a scooter or moped.
